Gloucester forward Mariano Galarza has signed a new contract with the Premiership club.

The 29-year-old Argentina international lock joined the Cherry and Whites from Worcester ahead of the 2014/15 season but he has since been hindered by injuries and has made just eight appearances for them so far, including in the European Challenge Cup final victory over Edinburgh in May.

He has played 25 times for Argentina and was a member of the Pumas' World Cup squad, although his tournament ended prematurely after he was handed a nine-week ban for making contact "with the eye or eye area" of New Zealand forward Brodie Retallick in their opening game.

There was speculation he would sign for the new Argentine Super Rugby franchise, but he has opted to extend his stay at Kingsholm.

Galarza told his club's official website: "I'm really happy to have signed a new contract. I feel the club has done a lot for me last season and this - I've been injured twice and the rehab has been fantastic both times.

"I've been banned in the World Cup and the club has always supported me, so I feel that I owe a lot to the club. I think it's time to show to everyone what I can do on the field and to give something back after all they've done for me.

"I now feel really good physically, full of energy and I'm enjoying myself. I think I have my best years ahead of me and I'm very happy to be here at Gloucester for a few more years."

Gloucester director of rugby David Humphreys said: "Mariano is a player who has made a massive impact on our squad with his personality, attitude and dedication to his work, and we are delighted that he has signed a long term deal with Gloucester.

"He has had to work incredibly hard to overcome a couple of injuries over the past 18 months, and was very unfortunate to be suspended at the RWC. But we believe Mariano will play a big part in what we are trying to achieve at this club going forward."
