Head winemaker and oenologist Brian Cheeseborough tastes a red from the tanks at Chateau Morrisette. A former commercial real estate banker from California, Cheeseborough has overseen winemaking in his home state, as well as in France and Argentina.

Cellar technician Lawrence Nichols analyzes samples from the winery tanks for sulphur content at Chateau Morrisette. Sulphur content must remain above a certain level to keep quality and taste consistent, Nichols said.

Chateau Morrisette’s winery hosts up to 25,000 tastings a year and sells up to 28 different vintages in the gift shop.

Last year, Chateau Morrisette planted three new acres of Niagara grapes to add to its existing 11 acres of wine grapes already in production at the vineyard. To produce nearly 1 million bottles of wine a year, however, the company brings in grapes from around the country, and even has one of its popular wines, Our Dog Blue, made in California.

FLOYD — This sparsely populated county has its own wine tour just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, with Blacksnake Meadery, Foggy Ridge Cider and Villa Appalachia all in quick driving distance of each other.

And the grandfather of the lot, Chateau Morrisette has continued to grow to now producing nearly one million bottles of wine a year and distributing across the country and into China.
