Moyes poised to sign Garay
David Moyes officially starts at Manchester United today – and he has the green light to sign Benfica’s Ezeguiel Garay. The Argentina centre-half has been on the radar since February - as revealed by MirrorSport- and a £17million swoop has moved closer after Benfica lined up his replacement. The Portuguese club are set to sign another Argentinian, Lisandro Ezequiel Lopez from Arsenal de Sarandi, to replace him, with the classy 23-year-old moving for around £3.5m and allowing Benfica the chance to sell Garay. Moyes wants a new centre-half, despite having a handful of options and he will be given the money to land his target, but sources in Lisbon suggest a second Premier League club is interested in Garay and may pounce once the price is set. Moyes is also still trying to close a deal for Leighton Baines, his left-back when he was at Everton.

As a result of the summer transfer window officially opening today, many of today’s papers speculate about which players might move to United. The Sun, among many others, features a list of Reds targets which includes Thiago Alcantara, Robert Lewandowski, Leighton Baines, Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo.

In the same paper, Gary Neville says he wants a major shake-up of The FA after England’s disappointing summer at every age level. “There’s a sense now that it’s not acceptable to get knocked out of competitions earlier than they should do and for the youth teams not to perform as well as they should do. They fans have had enough and they want action.”
