Death Flight Pilots Prosecuted for the First Time in Argentina

28 de noviembre de 2012, 10:12Buenos Aires, Nov 28 (Prensa Latina) Eight pilots of the so-called death flights carried out during the last civil-military dictatorship in Argentina as a means of making political prisoners disappear, will be tried for the first time, starting today in this capital.

The public trial is part of the third phase of the megacause for crimes against humanity committed at the Navy School of Mechanics (ESMA), in which 789 cases will be discussed, the highest number since the annulment of the Due Obedience and Final Stop laws.

Among the 68 defendants are naval aviators Enrique de Sain George, Emir Sisul Hess, Alejandro DĀ“Agostino and Julio Poch, the latter a nationalized Dutch citizen extradited from Spain and prosecuted for the crime of illegal deprivation of freedom aggravated in 29 cases.

The public trial, which will begin today in the Courts of Retiro are expected to last approximately two years, with 830 witnesses testifying.

In addition to the pilots of the death flights, 16 former naval officers of the Task Force 3.3.2 who were already convicted in October 2011 in the second trial of this megacause, are also expected to appear.
