Following the lead of an influential Italian bishop, a bishop in Argentina has warned that Catholics may be penalized with excommunication if they attend Mass at chapels administered by the traditionalist Society of St. Pius X (SSPX).
In a decree issued on November 3, Bishop Oscar Sarlinga of Zarate-Campana said that because SSPX priests are suspended from ministry, it is illict for them to celebrate Mass. He also pointed out that SSPX priests do not have faculties for hearing confessions, and therefore the sacrament is invalid.
The faithful may not request or receive the sacraments from SSPX priests, the bishop says. To do so, he warns would be a “breach of ecclesiastical ommunion.”
Bishop Sarlinga’s announcement comes just after a similar move by Bishop Marcello Semeraro of Albano, Italy, who is the secretary of the Council of Cardinals.
