Argentina Reiterates Need of Weapon-Free South Atlantic Region

04 de marzo de 2014, 14:34Buenos Aires, Mar 4 (Prensa Latina) Argentina ratified its sovereign claim over the Falkland Islands and for the South Atlantic region to be free from weapons, specially nuclear ones, to secure peace in the area, according to press reports.

Pagina 12 newspaper, news services MinutoUno and Infonews and Telam news agency, among other sources, released remarks made by Foreign Minister Hector Timerman in Geneva, where he denounced that London refused to notify if submarines sent to the South Atlantic region carried atomic weapons.

In this way, Timerman reaffirmed Argentina's stand to demilitarize the area.

He addressed the UN Conference on Disarmament as part of his country's strategy to denounce Britain in all international forums for its repeated lack of compliance with resolutions urging to discuss the Falkland Islands' sovereignty.

Timerman deplored that the European power refused to inform if there are atomic submarines in the islands. "That's why we condemn Britain's attitude of not having the willpower to clarify if it introduced nuclear weapons in a nuclear-free area," he said.

Therefore, Argentina considers that efforts to achieve final nuclear disarmament must continue, said Argentina's top diplomat.
