Argentina chasing F1 return

Argentina is keen on adding its name to the Formula 1 calendar; that's according to Tourism Minister Gustavo Santos.

The country last hosted a Formula 1 grand prix in 1998, a race that was won by Ferrari's Michael Schumacher at the Buenos Aires Autódromo.

The event was dropped from the calendar ahead of the 1999 season due to financial difficulties.

Last year, though, F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone revealed that he was "talking to" ministers about the possibility of Argentina returning.

Santos has now confirmed that the government is pushing ahead with plans to bring F1 back to the South American country.

He told Spanish news agency EFE: "These are challenges that would have a cost and complications but we have decided to pursue this as well as other major events."

He added that having a grand prix "would strengthen the image and positioning of Argentina" internationally.
