Manchester United have already swooped in to sign two of Argentina’s top performers during the World Cup this summer in the form of Marcos Rojo and Angel Di Maria, and it has now been revealed that Louis van Gaal has set his sights on signing another one of Albiceleste’s top performers in Brazil by attempting to lure goalkeeper Sergio Romero to Old Trafford.

While David De Gea remains the undisputed number one between the sticks at Manchester United, back up goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard has hinted that he intends to leave the club in search of regular first team football and as a result, van Gaal is looking to line up a replacement for the Danish international before sanctioning his departure.

Sergio Romero to replace Anders Lindegaard at United

Now according to reports in Italy, van Gaal is said to have identified Argentina number one Sergio Romero as his primary target to provide competition to De Gea in the first team.

Romero starred for Argentina at the World Cup, but has found his future at club level in question after deemed surplus to requirements at his club side Sampdoria. Therefore, it is believed that the Italian side are willing to let the 27-year old leave the club and the goalkeeper had reportedly attracted the interest of Liverpool.

However, it now seems that Manchester United have also entered the race to sign Romero and are confident of luring the Argentine star to Old Trafford.

Romero may not be too keen on a move to United

Romero has certainly displayed that he is a top class keeper during the World Cup and could prove to be a very good addition to the ranks at Old Trafford if indeed Lindegaard leaves. That being said, it is unclear as to whether the goalkeeper would be open to a move to Old Trafford, as he would most probably be swapping the bench at Sampdoria for the bench at United.

Currently at the peak of his powers, Romero is desperate to earn regular minutes on the pitch and a move to United may not be a good career choice for him, especially with De Gea firmly established as the first choice.
