Austrian fifth-seed Dominic Thiem won through to the second round of the Argentina Open courtesy of a three-set win over Pablo Carreno Busta.
Thiem led the seeds at the ATP 250 event in Buenos Aires as he edged Carreno Busta 6-0 3-6 6-3 on Tuesday.
The 22-year-old Thiem - the youngest player in the ATP's top 20 - converted five break points and saved four of his own to make it past the first round on the clay courts in the capital.
Awaiting Thiem in the second round is Portuguese qualifier Gaston Elias, who overcame Daniel Munoz de la Nava 4-6 6-4 6-1.
Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas - the eighth seed - fired down 10 aces as he also progressed with a 7-5 6-2 victory against Albert Ramos-Vinolas.
The straight-sets win set up a showdown with Colombian Santiago Giraldo.
Italian sixth-seed Fabio Fognini was not so lucky after he was ousted by local Federico Delbonis in three sets.
Delbonis rallied to a 6-7 (4-7) 6-4 6-4 triumph.
Elsewhere, last year's runner-up and 2007 champion Juan Monaco eased past Marco Cecchinato 6-1 6-3.
Renzo Olivo needed more than two hours to see off fellow Argentinian Facundo Bagnis 7-6 (11-9) 7-5.
Paolo Lorenzi trumped Pablo Andujar 2-6 7-5 6-2, and Dusan Lajovic defeated Facundo Arguello 7-6 (9-7) 6-3.
