CAPE TOWN, South Africa - Super Rugby organizer SANZAR says it is embarking on a "global search" for one more team to complete the southern hemisphere tournament's planned expansion to 18 clubs from 2016.
SANZAR confirmed the increase from 15 to 18 teams on Friday after the new format was announced this week by the national unions of New Zealand, Australia and South Africa — the countries that make up SANZAR.
Super Rugby will add a sixth team from South Africa and a first from Argentina. SANZAR chief executive Greg Peters says the last team "will be determined via a tender process."
Asia appears the likeliest region to provide the team with a Japan-based outfit a possibility because of the country's hosting of the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
