Soccer roundup: Marta leads Brazil past US

Five-time world player of the year Marta scored three goals to lead Brazil to a 3-2 come-from-behind win over the U.S. women’s soccer team in the International Tournament of Brasilia on Sunday.

Carli Lloyd and Megan Rapinoe scored a goal each in the first 10 minutes to give the U.S. an early lead, but Marta scored in the 19th, 55th and 66th minutes to guarantee the hosts a spot in the final of the four-team competition.

Brazil reached six points from two matches, while the United States remained on one. China, which routed Argentina 6-0 earlier Sunday, also has four points. Argentina has zero.

The U.S. needs to beat Argentina by several goals in the last round on Wednesday and hope that China loses to Brazil.

Virginia beats UCLA for College Cup title

Virginia is again the best in college soccer.

The Cavaliers beat UCLA 4-2 on penalty kicks after a scoreless tie to earn the NCAA title Sunday.

Virginia won the College Cup when Riggs Lennon slipped a low shot past diving UCLA goalkeeper Earl Edwards Jr. in the fifth round.

The Cavaliers (14-6-3) won their seventh national title, their first since 2009. They beat Akron here that year, also winning on penalty kicks after a scoreless match.

Champions League enters next phase with last-16 draw

With the group stage over, the Champions League enters the next phase when the last-16 knockout draw is made on Monday.

The past four winners – Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, and Barcelona – all won their group, with only Barcelona pushed hard in the process.

Borussia Dortmund and Porto, last season’s runner-up Atletico Madrid and surprise club Monaco are also seeded as group winners.

Juventus is the only former champion among unseeded group runners-up, which all host first-leg matches Feb. 17-18 and 24-25. Return matches are March 10-11 and 17-18.

The others are: Arsenal, advancing for a 15th straight year, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, Basel, Bayer Leverkusen, Schalke and Shakhtar Donetsk.

England: Manchester United’s unlikely title challenge in the Premier League gained further momentum with a 3-0 win over Liverpool, plunging last season’s runner-up into more disarray.

Goals by Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Robin van Persie sealed a sixth straight win for United, which has recovered from a disappointing start to the campaign to climb to third place and within eight points of leader Chelsea.

Eliminated from the Champions League on Tuesday, Liverpool dropped to 10th place in the Premier League after Tottenham’s 2-1 win at Swansea in Sunday’s other game.

Christian Eriksen drove in an 89th-minute winner for Spurs, who are seventh.

Italy: Patrice Evra scored his first goal in Serie A but Juventus was held 1-1 at home by Champions League hopeful Sampdoria.

Radja Nainggolan scored as second-place Roma won 1-0 at 10-man Genoa to bounce back from its Champions League elimination and set up a title fight with three-time defending champion Juve in the second half of the season.

Also Sunday, AC Milan beat Napoli 2-0 at the San Siro with goals from Jeremy Menez and Giacomo Bonaventura, ending Napoli’s 11-match unbeaten streak

France: Still unbeaten at the start of the week, Paris Saint-Germain was handed a second consecutive loss in the space of five days as the French champions lost 1-0 at relegation-threatened Guingamp following their 3-1 defeat against Barcelona in the Champions League.

Jeremy Pied headed home the winner and goalkeeper Jonas Lossl denied Zlatan Ibrahimovic with a decisive save in the closing stages. But leader Marseille did not take advantage of PSG’s setback as Marcelo Bielsa’s team also lost 1-0 at Monaco. Bernardo Silva scored the winner, preventing Marseille from extending its lead at the top of the standings to four points.

Spain: Villarreal striker Luciano Vietto scored late to grab a 1-0 over Atletico Madrid, using a quick change of foot to shed Diego Godin before firing the winner past goalkeeper Miguel Moya with six minutes to play.

Real Sociedad drew 1-1 with Athletic Bilbao under steady rain at Anoeta Stadium in coach David Moyes’ first Basque Country derby.

Germany: Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Moenchengladbach drew 1-1 in the Bundesliga, while promoted Paderborn held second-place Wolfsburg by the same score on Sunday.

Leverkusen midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu opened the scoring in the early game with an effort inside the far corner. But the home side failed to hold on to the lead and was made to pay six minutes before the break when Roel Brouwers equalized after a corner.
