River Plate lets 2-0 lead slip, settles for 2-2 draw with mid-table Union

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — River Plate let a 2-0 lead slip away Sunday and was forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against mid-table Union in Argentina's first division.

Fernando Cavenaghi and Sebastian Driussi scored early for River, before Lucas Gamba got one back for Union in the 54th minute and Victor Malcorra scored the equalizer in the 74th.

River slipped to eight points in four matches. Rosario Central, which defeated Olimpo 3-1 on Saturday, leads the division with a perfect 12 points in four games.

Also Sunday: Defensa y Justicia 1, Banfield 0; Lanus 0, Arsenal 0; Velez Sarsfield 1, Sarmiento 1; San Martin 0, Argentinos Juniors 0.

Boca Juniors and Estudiantes are perfect through three matches in Argentina's new 30-team first division, which ends play in November.
