NII Holdings, which owns the Nextel brand in Latin America, will hold on to its Brazilian unit even after filing for Chapter 11 in the US, reports Reuters. To promote a change in Brazil, the operator is relying on regulations and new spectrum coming available. Due to its small market share, these can provide it with competitive advantages unavailable to large rivals. These advantages would disappear if Nextel Brasil merges with a larger operator, one of the reasons why negotiations on an acquisition never materialized, despite a wave of consolidation in the Brazilian market, according to two sources with direct knowledge of the situation. NII Holdings, which has sold its operations in Chile and Peru and is seeking to leave Argentina, will restructure its business in the key markets of Mexico and Brazil, said one of the two sources.
