Maradona says Messi does not need World Cup title winner tag to be world’s ‘best’

Beijing, Mar. 06 (ANI): Former Argentine coach and captain Diego Maradona has said that Lionel Messi does not need to win the World Cup in order to be the world's best player.

Messi said that if Messi did win the World Cup it would be great for Argentina, but even if he does not win it, his achievements up to now to be 'among the greatest' would still remain.

According to China Daily, Maradona, who led Argentina to the World Cup title in Mexico in 1986, also added that despite not scoring any goal Messi still had a great World Cup in South Africa in 2010 where the team lost 4-0 to Germany in the quarterfinals under Maradona's coaching.

Maradona further added that he told Messi that he would have many 'World Cups' to get 'revenge' after Argentina was eliminated and Messi was crying with his head 'bowed', the report mentioned.

Maradona also said that it would be a test of character for Messi as two-time World Cup champion Argentina begins to crank up its preparations for this year's World Cup in Brazil, the report added. (ANI)
