Mar del Plata: Argentina Plans Latin American Cinema Screens Network

MAR DEL PLATA: Driving to create exhibition outlets for Latin American movies over Latin America – plus A complement of often European arthouse and U.S. indie fare – Argentina’s INCAA Film Institute is planning a 45-screen network of cinemas specializing in Latin American movies and spread over all South America.

Called the Red de Salas Cinematográfica (Cinema Screens Network), the initiative, created by Argentina’s Nation Entity for Regional Programming is labeled the Salas de Cine de Latin America (Latin American Cinema Screens),

It sees INCAA covering the costs of digital conversion of the screens, where necessary, said Ariel Direse, INCAA general coordinator, digitalization and new audiovisual technologies, at a Mar del Plata industry presentation.

Screens selected will be coordinated with other state film agencies in Latin America. Based out of Argentina, a Programming Entity will help select movies to screen in the cinema. A marketing team will provide backup, Direse added.

SALAS kicks in from January 2016. First-phase will begin in Argentina with 10 screens, per Direse, then INCAA will roll out over South America. Using the Network will allow films to allow some films to bow on a 100-screen print spread, he added. Scheme is backed by the state film agencies across the region.

“The aim is to take Latin America film exhibition to another level,” Direse said. Films will be programmed by satellite.

INCAA joined forces with other Latin American film authorities in South America’s Mercosur – Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay – to create a non-commercial 30-location network of alternative screens, the Red de Salas Digitales (RSD), which opened in October. Run by producer Fernando Epstein, RSD screens culturally skewed movies, with the long-term aim of creating a larger audiences for movies made in the region.
