Marcos Rojo has dropped out of the Argentina squad at the request of Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal.

Defender Rojo is still recovering from the hamstring tear that has kept him out of the last four games in all competitions.

Argentina boss Gerardo Martino had selected him for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador and Paraguay on October 9 and 14.

But a statement released by the Argentinian FA on Monday read: "Marcos Rojo will not be part of the squad, as he is in the final phase of recovery from a grade 1 injury in his right hamstring.

"Louis van Gaal, the Manchester United coach, was in touch yesterday afternoon with Argentina coach Gerardo Martino to explain to him the convenience of the defender finishing his recovery in the club.

"The situation was understood by the Albiceleste trainer, who will hope to have Rojo in top condition for the second qualifying double-header against Brazil and Colombia, in November."

Rojo has played just twice for United this season; the defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League and the 3-2 away victory at Southampton in September.

He joined the club from Sporting Lisbon for £16m in the summer of 2014 and has made 29 appearances in all competitions.
