Manchester United winger Angel Di Maria was taken to hospital following Argentina’s 1-0 defeat to Portugal at Old Trafford, Sky Sports is reporting, although the severity of the knock has been played down.
The winger was caught by on loan United forward Nani during the first half of what has been billed a disappoint affair, and although he managed to play on was substituted at the hour mark.
Argentina coach Gerardo Martino confirmed the player needed to go to hospital for a scan but played down fears of a potentially serious injury to add to United’s worsening injury crisis.
He said: “We don't think it is anything serious. It was quite a tough blow that he took.
“It was a tough knock. It cut the skin a little bit. But we have had a look at it and we are evaluating the situation.
“We are having a look at some X-rays, some images that have been taken but in spite of that we don't think it is too serious.”
Di Maria echoed this view on his Twitter page stating he should be fit to play at the weekend provided there is no more swelling to the area.
Louis van Gaal is already dealing with an agonising injury list with Daley Blind, Luke Shaw, David De Gea and Michael Carrick also returning from the international break with injuries – while seven more players sit on the side lines.
However seven of the 12 injured have some chance of featuring at the weekend in a crunch clash with Arsenal.
