The 21-year-old Argentina international has had a tough introduction into life in the Premier League since his move from Roma last August, failing to hit the back of the net in nine appearances.
And talking to Italian media, Lamela's father, Jose, admitted his son was missing life in the Serie A.
However, Lamela senior refused to speculate on possible destinations away from North London believing Tottenham would refuse to part ways with one of their major summer acquisitions.
"Erik is not happy and wants to go back to Italy," Jose Lamela said.
"He has been linked with Lazio, but I don't know anything about this. Could he re-join Roma? I don't know.
"Tottenham does not want him to leave in January."
