MERCURIAL: Will Argentina's Lionel Messi be celebrating come July 13?
ARGENTINA WILL win the World Cup, according to The Voice team! Various members of the newspaper and online team were asked who they thought will end up lifting the famous trophy on July 13, and the overwhelming majority plumped for Argentina, who have the mercurial Lionel Messi in their ranks
The greatest show on Earth kicks off today (June 12) when hosts Brazil play Croatia in the opening fixture of the 2014 World Cup. It is time for the talking to stop as 32 teams seek to lift the greatest prize in football.
Brazil, who have won the tournament five times, start as favourites but Phil Scolari's team can take nothing for granted.
Among the other favourites are reigning world and European champions Spain. Add Germany and Belgium – with the likes of France and England just under the radar - and the 20th edition of the World Cup promises to be as competitive as ever.
The Voice's editorial team make their predictions…
George Ruddock, editor:
Argentina. They are on their home continent and have great players. Brazil will be under too much pressure and
Rodney Hinds, sports editor:
Argentina. If they can defend properly they are in with a shout. Going forward, with Messi pulling the strings, they can do it.
Dionne Grant, online editor:
Argentina. They are a South American team, which means they're familiar with Brazil's terrain. They come complete with pedigree players (Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero). They want this!
Elizabeth Pears, head of news:
Spain. Brazil may be favourites, but a large part of that is the romance of the home side lifting the trophy. I think Spain will ruin their fairytale ending.
Rykesha Hudson, arts entertainment writer:
Brazil. I think a bit like London 2012 for British athletes, home support will be key.
Joel Campbell, chief sports writer:
Uruguay. If anyone has the firepower, they do with Suarez and Cavani. They know the conditions too.
Natasha Henry, sports writer:
Argentina. Messi. Simple. It’s time for him to deliver on the ultimate world stage.
John Portch, sports writer:
Argentina. They have proven talent in attack and a fairly straight forward run to the latter part of the tournament
Ayo Odumade, sports writer:
Argentina. Home conditions and Lionel Messi has a chance to cement his legacy like Pele and Maradona
