IDB supports renewables in Argentina's low-cost housing

July 31 (SeeNews) - The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) said Thursday it has approved USD 14.4 million (EUR 13.1m) in non-refundable financing from the Global Environmental Facility to support the inclusion of energy efficiency and renewable energy into Argentina's social housing.

The project will establish technical standards and specifications for energy-efficient housing through the construction of 128 prototypes across Argentina, with renewable energy schemes adapted to each bio-climactic zone, one-year monitoring and inspections during construction and housing use.

The project, aimed at improving the quality of life and reducing greenhouse gases, is the first of this magnitude and reach in Latin America and the Caribbean, IDB project manager Alberto Levy said.

Along with the approved financing, the scheme includes USD 70.7 million in local funding and a USD-1-million technical cooperation grant from IDB.
