Under the National Constitution security is a responsibility of each provincial government, the cabinet chief reaffirmed today, a line he has been maintaining since the first day of police strikes and looting. Referring also to yesterday’s violent incidents in the City of Buenos Aires, Jorge Capitanich said “looting and organized vandalism can no longer be repeated in Argentina.”
“The national government can not replace the responsibility of each province. Every governor has the faculties to conduct the security forces and establish strategies,” the head of ministers stated as he addressed reporters at the Casa Rosada presidential palace this morning.
Regarding the demonstration at Argentina’s national monument the Obelisk yesterday that ended with Boca Juniors’ fans climbing on top of traffic lights and destroying nearby shops and at least 7 police officers injured as riot trucks appeared at the scene, the official said "the only security force that intervened was the federal police" although, he added, the City of Buenos Aires is Argentina’s “only area” where both the Federal and the Metropolitan Police can deploy their agents.
“We had to act amid the absence of other forces,” Jorge Capitanich affirmed.
