Golden Eaglets pip Argentina in friendly

Emmanuel Amuneke’s boys showed their preparedness to soar in Chile after defeating the South American side in Buenos Aires

Nigeria U17 defeated Argentina U17 2-1 in an international friendly played at the Argentina Football Association Centre in Buenos Aires on Wednesday evening.

Victor Osimhem and Funsho Bamgboye’s goals handed the Africans a slim victory against the South Americans as both teams continue to fine tune their strategies for the 2015 U17 Fifa World Cup in Chile.

Osimhen got the curtain raiser in the 21st minute after a one-on-one pass with Chinedu Madueke who got a pass from Bamgboye.

Bamgboye doubled the lead five minutes later when he struck from the edge of the box after a goal mouth melee off a corner kick by Kelechi Nwakali.

Not too long, the Argentines capitalised on a defensive error by the Eaglets to reduce the deficit.

In the second half, both teams failed to the back of the net. Coach Amuneke is expected to announce his final squad for the Fifa U17 World Cup later this week.

Nigeria are pooled in Group A alongside Chile, Croatia and the United States of America while the Albicelestes will slug it out against Australia, Mexico and Germany in Group C.

The Golden Eaglets begin their world title defence against the United States of America on October 17 at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos, Santiago.
