Goal on film: The Lionel Messi story

The Barcelona Argentina star ended the year without a major trophy despite his best efforts in front of goal - watch our exclusive documentary here!

The 2013-14 season was an unusual one in the trophy-laden career of Lionel Messi - he did not pick up any major medals over the course of the campaign.

Barcelona failed to win any of the Champions League, La Liga or Copa del Rey titles for the first time in six seasons, while Argentina were beaten by Germany in the World Cup final.

Despite ending the season without a top honour, Messi still scored a total of 48 goals for club and country as well as winning the Golden Ball in Brazil after his four goals lit up the tournament in the group stages.

Due to his lack of team honours, Messi eventually had to settle for the third spot on the podium in the 2014 Goal 50, coming in behind Cristiano Ronaldo - who matched the Argentine with a third overall victory - and Arjen Robben.

Check out the video at the top of the page to watch Goal's exclusive documentary on Messi, which includes contributions from former Barcelona man Gaizka Mendieta, old team-mate Henrik Larsson and Germany icon Franz Beckenbauer.
