CORPUS CHRISTI -
Imagine a bicycle ride from Alaska to Argentina.
It's a trip one young man is taking, to raise money for his family's medical bills.
“My cousin... he got diagnosed first,” said 23-year-old Cameron Hatch. “He was playing basketball and got elbowed in the stomach, that's where they found the tumor.”
Soon after, four members of Hatch’s family were diagnosed with metastatic paraganglioma, a rare and a genetic form of cancer.
That started Hatch on a journey he calls “Pennies for Miles.”
"For every mile I ride people could donate a penny,” he said. “Which doesn't seem like a lot, but with enough people and the amount of miles I’m riding, it would add up."
He began in June in Alaska, and rode his bicycle all the way here, to the Corpus Christi shoreline.
Over 4,000 miles later, Hatch isn’t even halfway to his destination, but he’s not giving up.
"I’m thinking about my future destinations,” he said. “That keeps me excited, keeps me going.”
