Fabian Gomez of Argentina posted a brilliant final round of 66 to win the FedEx St. Jude Classic at TPC Southwind by four shots over England’s Greg Owen.
Gomez and Owen began the final round tied for the lead and the Englishman moved clear when the Argentinian made a bogey on the 5th. But Gomez struck back with a birdie at the 8th. When Owen dropped a shot at the 9th the pair were tied at the top once more.
On the back nine Gomez pulled clear. A birdie at the 11th pushed him in front and another at the 16th secured his advantage, as Owen had dropped shots at the 12th and 14th holes. The Argentinian finished the tournament in style with a birdie at the home hole to record a four-shot victory. It was his first PGA Tour title and a career-changing result for the 36-year-old who earned his 2015 playing privileges through the web.com Tour.
“Winning here on the PGA Tour is something amazing, and I’m going to enjoy the moment with my family,” he said.
Phil Mickelson recorded an excellent final round of 65 at TPC Southwind to finish in a tie for third. The left-hander will travel to Chambers Bay for the year’s second Major with great confidence.
“I’m feeling a lot better about heading into the U.S. Open after this week than I did after last,” he said.
Matt Jones of Australia had a chance to catch Gomez after he had birdied the 13th. But a bogey on the 15th hampered his progress and, in the end, he finished five shots back in a tie for third with Mickelson, Brooks Koepka, Seung-Yul Noh and Michael Thompson.
