CyC S.A. Empowers Mobile Backhaul Services Throughout Argentina With …

CHATSWORTH, CA--(Marketwire - Nov 6, 2012) - MRV Communications™, Inc. (OTCQB: MRVC) ("MRV" or the "Company"), a leading provider of optical communications network infrastructure equipment and integration and managed services, today announced that its OptiSwitch® Carrier Ethernet Access solution was chosen by CyC S.A. to help launch a future-proof Carrier Ethernet network capable of supporting wholesale Mobile Backhaul and other revenue-generating data services.

The dramatic growth of cellular traffic in Argentina presented an opportunity for CyC S.A., a subsidiary of the largest integrated electric company in Argentina, to leverage the extensive electrical system footprint of their parent company as the basis for a new mobile backhaul network. CyC S.A. has developed an extensive fiber optics mesh network using aerial cables cooperating with utilities companies, mainly electrical ones. This network is being used to access cell towers in metropolitan areas throughout Argentina. At these locations, CyC S.A. strived to build a Carrier Ethernet network capable of supporting wholesale mobile backhaul services while addressing major challenges including extreme temperatures that the network elements endured during the summer months, adequate coverage of each city with scattered base stations, and supporting legacy circuit-base voice traffic.

MRV's OptiSwitch Carrier Ethernet 2.0 demarcation and aggregation devices -- the OS904-MBH-4 timing and synchronization gateway with circuit emulation services (CES) and the OS9124-410G first mile packet-optical aggregation platform -- were able to provide critical functionality that ensures CyC S.A.'s mobile backhaul network has the capabilities needed today with a solid migration path to a full Carrier Ethernet network deployment down the road. The G8032 Ethernet Ring Protection and 10GE link aggregation capabilities also provide CyC S.A. with high reliability and create a redundant fault tolerant network. MRV was also able to meet CyC S.A.'s requirement for a temperature and environmental hardened device to address the need for unconditioned devices throughout their network. Finally, CyC S.A. will also be able to offer Business Ethernet services with strict and assured service-level agreements (SLAs) to commercial and office park locations from the network.

"MRV's long history of designing and building mobile backhaul networks was a key factor in our decision to select the OptiSwitch for demarcation and aggregation functions. MRV's experienced engineering teams worked closely with us to design and build the network according to our particular service requirements," said Gustavo Varela, COO at CyC S.A. "As a result, we have a greater peace of mind in knowing that we are implementing a tried and tested mobile backhaul solution that will become a key element of our network service offering moving forward."

"MRV has a proven track record with demanding utility projects worldwide. As a result, MRV's engineering team was able to work closely with CyC S.A. to design a network capable of delivering a greenfield wholesale mobile backhaul network and other services that will be deployed in the future," said Dave Stehlin, president of MRV's Optical Communications Systems™ (OCS) division. "Our OptiSwitch best-of-breed Carrier Ethernet demarcation and aggregation devices are able to provide the critical functionality for CyC S.A. to meet the needs for both current and new customers as well as pave a smooth migration path to a fully packet-based network."
