Chile coach Jorge Sampaoli wants ‘great Copa America’ for hosts

The 54-year-old hopes his team can produce their very best in front of their home fans in next year's competition, after they were drawn alongside Mexico, Ecuador and Bolivia

Chile coach Jorge Sampaoli says he wants a "great Copa America" campaign from his side after the hosts were drawn alongside Mexico, Ecuador and Bolivia in Group A of next year's continental competition.

Sampaoli's side won many admirers as they came close to knocking out Brazil in the World Cup earlier this year, only to lose out on penalties to Luiz Felipe Scolari's men in Belo Horizonte, and the hosts will be expected to fare even better on home soil in 2015.

"It's going to be very difficult," Sampaoli said. "There will be some very important national teams present, but we are going to try to make it a great Copa America for Chile.

"Any rival would be complicated," he added after seeing his team avoid both Uruguay and Colombia (as well as fellow seeds Argentina and Brazil) in Monday's draw in Vina del Mar. "Now it's a case of preparing for each of the characteristics of the teams we are going to face."

Sampaoli also believes the host nation are well prepared to stage next year's competition.

"Chile is in good shape," he said. "It's a moment of learning and growth. A good job has been done and the preparation has been ideal. Let's hope everything works out well."

Meanwhile, former Chilean great Elias Figueroa hopes the locals can benefit from playing at home.

"I think all of the teams are difficult," he said. "There are no easy teams, but Chile have a certain advantage by playing at home. They [Mexico, Ecuador and Bolivia] are accessible rivals. As a Chilean, I hopes things go well for Chile."

Figueroa, a former central defender who is often considered to be Chile's greatest-ever player, also spent a large part of his playing career in Brazil with Internacional and admits he will have divided loyalties in next summer's competition.

"I have Brazilian blood and I have always been well received in Brazil," he said. "On the one hand it's the place where I was born [Chile] and on the other a place where I spent a large part of my career [Brazil]. I hope both teams qualify from their groups."

And in terms of the organisation for the Copa America, he added: "Chile organised a World Cup [in 1962], recently they had an Under-20 World Cup and they will be ready. I hope that everyone who comes here leaves our country very happy."
