Australia’s Michael Cheika: we expected Argentina to be in World Cup semi-final

There has been the sound this week of tables being turned. Australia go into Sunday’s semi-final against Argentina having developed their opponents’ relish for scrummaging, while the Pumas have acquired the Wallabies’ relish for playing with a flourish out wide. The last time Australia and Argentina met in the World Cup was in the opening match of the 2003 tournament, when the contrast in styles was marked. The Pumas were upset, as England were to be in the final against the Wallabies, that Read more [...]

Number eight David Pocock (calf) and full-back Israel Folau (ankle) have Read more [...]

Friendships drive Argentina’s World Cup charge

0 SharesprintTomas Cubelli could be forgiven for being sick of the sight of Argentina teammate Martin Landajo. Born almost exactly a year after his fellow scrum-half, Cubelli has been forced to share the No.9 shirt with his elder colleague from age-group national teams right up to the senior Pumas set-up.It is an approach that has again been in evidence during the Rugby World Cup with Cubelli starting the first two games -- against New Zealand and Georgia -- and Landajo coming into Daniel Hourcade's Read more [...]

Pumas have always been passionate but devil comes from eye for detail

If Japan set this World Cup on the road to success with that remarkable win over South Africa on the opening weekend, then my money is on Argentina to carry the baton through the knockout stages. They have already surprised some with the margin of victory over Ireland last Sunday, but what price an All Blacks v Argentina final? If that happens and the Pumas beat Australia this weekend, is that so big a surprise? Probably to some in the northern hemisphere, because since 2007, the Pumas have been Read more [...]
