CONMEBOL: Sept. 11, 2014 - The new stadium of Argentinas San Lorenzo Club will be called "Papa Francisco", in honor of its most famous fan Pope Francis, the institution announced Wednesday on its official account on the Twitter social network.
"San Lorenzo will serve as future host at the Papa Francisco stadium in Boedo, Argentina," said the tweet.
The club plans to rebuild its historic stadium "El Gasmetro" in the capital district of Boedo, where it has its headquarters, and even though there is currently a hypermarket operating there but since 2013 there was an agreement reached to proceed with the plans.
In November 2012, the Club was able to get the communal parliament to pass a law authorizing them the return of the land they had lost three decades ago.
After recently winning the 2014 Copa Libertadores for the first time in its history, the leaders of the club took the Cup and shared it with Pope Francis at the Vatican. The decision to name the new stadium with the name of the Supreme Pontiff was decided by the executive committee chaired by Matthias Lammens and also, the popular TV host and businessman Marcelo Tinelli.
The original stadium called El Gasmetro was demolished in 1979 and San Lorenzo had to move further south, in the neighborhood of Flores, where they built their new facilities and named it Nuevo Gasmetro stadium, but the fans always dreamed to return to their historic place.
