There was a large mobilization of security forces looking for a fugitive Mexican drug lord in both Argentina and Chile late last week, but it appears they were acting on false information.
Argentine security officials said today that Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán is not in their country, nor is he in Chile.
A call alerting authorities to the Sinaloa Cartel leader’s presence near the country’s border with Chile was later traced and the caller is now in custody. Argentina’s intelligence service was also in communication with the United States’ FBI to determine the veracity of the information.
Guzmán has been on the run since he escaped from the Altiplano federal penitentiary on July 11.
