Argentina’s Menem refuses to testify in bombing trial

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) " Former Argentine President Carlos Menem is refusing to testify in a trial in which he is accused of derailing the investigation into the South American nation's worst terrorist attack.

The 1994 bombing at a Jewish community center in Buenos Aires killed 85 people and remains unsolved.

The 85-year-old Menem declined to testify Thursday through a videoconference from his home in La Rioja, about 700 miles (1,150 kilometers) north of Buenos Aires.

A former top judge and several other officials are also being tried for the alleged cover up.

Menem was president from 1989-1999 and is now a senator. The court has allowed him to be absent from the proceedings because of health problems. He denies any wrongdoing.
