Argentina Senate passes AMIA Memorandum

Following a decision by President Cristina Fernandez to call for a special session of the National Congress to address the MoU, the ruling party - the Front for Victory and the opposition discussed the issue for more than ten hours.

As announced prior to the debate, the opposition blocks rejected the move calling it a "step backward" and a "decline" of Argentina's sovereignty and jurisdiction.

Heads of the Israeli-Argentine Mutual Association (AMIA) and the Delegation of Israeli-Argentine Associations (DAIA) have also maintained their tough position against the government´s policy and the diplomatic rapprochement with Tehran.

Lawmakers aligned with Fernandez´s administration, however, have affirmed their support. They said that the deal Argentine Foreign Minister Hector Timerman and his Iranian counterpart Ali Akbar Salehi sealed last month merely shows their determination to find truth and justice after 19 years of impunity in the AMIA case.

On July 18th 1994, a car bomb ripped through the AMIA Jewish center in Buenos Aires killing 85 people. Iran has categorically denied any involvement in the attack.

Next week, it will be the turn of the Lower House of the Argentine National Congress to address the M-o-U signed with Iran, a bilateral agreement that has been referred by President Cristina Fernandez as "historic" and that challenges the geopolitical interests of certain foreign powers.
