Argentina nears ten million pay-TV subs
Argentina's pay-TV sector has added 666,800 subscriptions during the past year, to reach a total audience of 9.8 million homes.
According to the latest report from the Latin American Multichannel Advertising Council (LAMAC), these figures represent a growth of 7.3%.
The numbers show even more growth than in 2012, when the Argentinean sector celebrated a strong increase in subscribers. According to LAMAC's report, the pay-TV industry is getting stronger year after year, despite already being one of the more mature markets in the region.
Unlike in the rest of Latin America, the Argentinean growth is still lead by cable operators, while direct-to-home (DTH) satellite services are drawing all the customers in other countries. Over 75% of homes are still paying for a cable platform, while the rest have chosen satellite. The figures vary in different areas of the country, with cable companies especially strongly established in the capital district.
Buenos Aires metropolitan district (Gran Buenos Aires) has 3.6 million subscribers, while the other 6.2 million are spread throughout the country. Córdoba and Santa Fe provinces, with 8% of subscribers each, have the next highest subscriber numbers.
