Argentina: Government says insecurity ‘a problem’

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina – Jorge Capitanich, the leader of the Argentine Cabinet, said on March 16 that insecurity has become “a problem” that needs to be addressed.

“Public safety is a multicausal phenomenon,” he said.

Capitanich added the rise of insecurity and crime is “a world problem” that’s related to the “indices of greater population concentration due to growth in the rates of urbanization.”

Argentines ranked crime (43.2%) as their top fear, followed by inflation (22%) and corruption (3.1%), according to a recent survey conducted by the Raúl Aragón Associates consulting firm.

Capitanich said insecurity “is not resolved only with more patrol cars, police or cameras” but by working on “social inclusion and distributive equity.”
