Argentina Earthquake Today 2015: 5.2 Terremoto Strikes Country


ST LOUIS (LALATE) – An Argentina earthquake today 2015 has struck. A strong terremoto en Argentina hoy, a 5.2 temblor, started moments ago. Damage assessment is pending.

USGS indicates to news that a 5.2 magnitude Argentina earthquake today December 4, 2015 began just after 6:10 pm PST. The quake was shallow. Reps tell news that it started only 13 miles below ground level. As a result the quake could be felt across the country. The quake was 17 miles east of Libertador General San Martin. It was 27 miles east of Fraile Pintado as well.

Several big quakes have hit the country in recent years. In October 2011, Argentina suffered a 6.2 magnitude temblor, one of the strongest earthquakes to strike the country that year. The quake was centered sixty-five miles east of San Salvador de Jujuy and roughly eighty miles outside El Quebrachal. In September that year, a 6.7 magnitude quake made news, striking west of Anatuya, Santiago del Estero. Months earlier, the Tucuman region of Argentina dominated new after suffering a 5.3 magnitude terremoto as well.

Officials tell news that “Since 1900, numerous magnitude 8 or larger earthquakes have occurred on this subduction zone interface that were followed by devastating tsunamis, including the 1960 M9.5 earthquake in southern Chile, the largest instrumentally recorded earthquake in the world. ” They add “Other notable shallow tsunami-generating earthquakes include the 1906 M8.5 earthquake near Esmeraldas, Ecuador, the 1922 M8.5 earthquake near Coquimbo, Chile, the 2001 M8.4 Arequipa, Peru earthquake, the 2007 M8.0 earthquake near Pisco, Peru, and the 2010 M8.8 Maule, Chile earthquake located just north of the 1960 event.”
