Argentina-Brazil football clash off after deluge

South American football giants Argentina and Brazil have had a 1-1 draw in Buenos Aires, in a World Cup qualifier that was postponed for 24 hours over heavy rain.

Brazil is always a showdown worth waiting for, and wait is exactly what fans will have to do.

The match has been rescheduled for Friday at 9pm local time (midnight GMT).

A torrential downpour over the Argentine capital left the pitch at the famed Monumental Stadium heavily waterlogged.

“I wanted to play”, said Argentine forward Gonzalo Higuain.

With the threat of hail and lightning, officials have chose to postpone the World Cup qualifier between Argentina and Brazil to today. It was Argentina’s first goal in three World Cup qualifiers.

Argentina, missing a glut of injured stars including Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero, started the stronger against a Brazil side who welcomed back suspended striker Neymar.

Ecuador leads South American qualifying with a flawless nine points followed by Chile with seven and Uruguay with six. Fidel Martinez scored the victor in the 59th minute. La Albiceleste have only ever missed one global championship, more than four decades ago.

Bolivia defeated Venezuela 4-2, taking advantage of playing in La Paz where the altitude is about 3,650 meters (11,975 feet).

Brazil has four points from three games.

Friday’s match began with a minute of silence for the scores killed in Friday’s shootings and explosions in Paris.

Argentina are yet to win a game in the preliminary rounds, losing at home to Ecuador and scraping a draw with Paraguay.
