2 US tourists shot, beaten but foil Buenos Aires robbers

A U.S. tourist was shot in the buttocks and his friend left battered and bruised after they tried to foil an armed raid on a black market currency exchange shop in Argentina.

Arcadius Kaselinsky, 32, and James Posso, 44, stepped in to the downtown Buenos Aires shop yesterday afternoon and saw it was being held up by two men.

The pistol-toting attackers were wielding a 9mm and a Glock .40 as they ordered employees of the fifth-floor business to hand over cash.

Seeing the Americans, they decided to rob them. But the tourists had other ideas, and put up a fight against their assailants.

Omar, who was in the shop at the time, told Clarin newspaper: 'When they decided to rob one of the tourists, he reacted and started to fight until the moment he was shot. That was when it stopped.'

Shop owner Ramón said he escaped during the fight to call police and ambulance for help, adding: 'In less than five minutes the shop was full of police'

As officers swooped, the pair ran down the stairs, but seeing they were surrounded, entered a first-floor office.

Threatening the owners with their guns, they smashed a window overlooking the busy Calle Lavalle and jumped out.

An eye-witness said: 'As it's quite high, around six or seven metres, it was clear they were going to injure themselves.

'The fat one fell head first and hurt his head. The other one fell ok, but it was difficult for him to escape.'

Carlos Jiménez (44), from Uruguay, was arrested after the assault and taken to hospital for treatment.

The other attacker, who has not been named but is from Argentina, managed to walk several blocks but was soon picked up by police.

They were found to have various currencies on them, including pesos, dollars, euros and reales. Kaselinsky and Posso were also taken to hospital but released soon after.
